To celebrate Earth Day 2026, Florida Partners welcomes Carla M. Arias, an educator and scholar specializing in the area of biomimicry. According to Arias’s bio, biomimicry, an attribute of biophilic design, is essential for discovering a knowledge-base rooted in 3.8 billion years of ‘biota intelligence.’

While completing her biomimicry capstone project she met Xylocopa violacea, the violet-winged carpenter bee in Finca Moraima’s Pollinator Garden (X. Violacea looks like a bumble-bee-sized flying black beetle).

Inspired by the solitary carpenter bee, other pollinators and their pollinating plants, indicator-species, wet meadows, and the 2024 United Nations COP-16 Biodiversity Conference in Cali, Colombia, she attended the ‘People’s COP,’ the Green Zone. Here her aspiration for biodiversity conservation was seeded and thus began her capstone project journey: “Collective Biodiversity Habitat Enhancement”; Biota TalesTM; and the forth-coming The Biota Narrative.

Arias aspires to spend the latter years of her life learning, advocating, educating, emulating and sharing biota intelligence for sustainable development, earth regeneration, biodiversity conservation, and planetary health and human well-being.
